Mechanical Design Engineer
What to Expect
Tesla is seeking a subject matter expert in material handling equipment to drive the development of equipment selection standards for Gigafactory Texas and any future sites. This role requires extensive experience with both automation and manual material handling equipment in a manufacturing setting, and will serve as a leader to develop optimal equipment recommendations for things such as interfacing with automation equipment, dollies, and docking stations, etc. This role requires the expert to optimize and innovate, drawing on deep experience with both automated and manual material handling equipment. This role will be based in Austin, TX.

What You’ll Do
- Develop concepts for automation cells, robot EOAT, conveyors, lineside automation, dollies and docking stations, and AGVs in coordination with manufacturing, material flow, and packaging teams
- Develop standards for material handling equipment within the organization, including, but not limited to conveyors, forklifts, tuggers, warehouse racking, dock levelers, dock doors, and dollies.
- Keep up with new technologies and industry standards to identify and recommend equipment selection
- Work closely with purchasing to develop RFQs for vendors for new equipment purchases
- Maintain standard library of equipment, including CAD drawings and specifications
- Provide justifications for specific equipment purchases to management
- Proficiency in designing parts and assemblies using 3D modeling software (SolidWorks Preferred)
- Work closely with the layout and material flow design teams to develop solutions to new material handling challenges
What You’ll Bring
- BS in Engineering or equivalent experience
- 7+ years of experience working with material handling equipment in a manufacturing environment.
- 7+ years of experience designing mechanical components and systems from concept through production validation
- Extensive knowledge of material handling equipment
- Familiarity with automation equipment and fixture requirements. Must understand the integration of equipment design into existing or new systems.
- Experience drafting engineering drawings and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T bonus)
- Experience working with the purchasing group and interacting with equipment vendors
- Experience with SolidWorks, CATIA or a similar modeling software
- Proactive approach to identifying new technologies to continue improving operational efficiency
- Experience doing the detailed analysis necessary to make data driven decisions
- Experience with purchasing and funding approval processes
- Knowledge of material flow challenges within a manufacturing environment
- Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight deadlines
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work cross-functionally to develop new solutions
