Manufacturing Engineer
Tesla’s Manufacturing Engineering team is at the forefront of building first-of-a-kind exterior finishing processes which allow us to produce amazing vehicles at best in class quality and rate; in a safe and ergonomic environment.
The Coatings team is seeking a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer to focus on supporting the scaling of our operations and product range. You will design and develop technically complex processes to deliver quality and efficient production yield; which includes process development, specification and validation and establishing/optimization of critical process parameters. The candidate will work closely with internal cross-functional teams, external vendors and technology partners on process development from concept to production.
What You’ll Do
- Leading product design for manufacturability and sustainability including:
- Analysis of product design and identification of potential risks to the process
- Support FMEA and development of solutions to address critical risks
- Documentation of product requirements for equipment specification
- Process development from concept to serial production
- Technology research and development in design and manufacturing
- Process invention, development, trials, and testing that shape the design of the process and/or product
- Process release through detailed equipment specification, manufacturing instructions, workstation and line layouts, product trials, and prototype production management
- Factory design, layout, and simulation for:
o Line balancing
o Capacity simulation and modeling
o Automation
o Part presentation
o Data systems
o Yield studies
o Product launch and process validation
- Oversee installation and commissioning of new manufacturing lines
- Develop and manage qualification protocols/activities
- Lead and provide process validation/qualification documentation
- Utilize statistical tools (such as GR&R, SPC and Cp/pCk) to ensure processes/fixtures are performing
- Coordination with other process, equipment, mechanical, electrical and support disciplines including project managers, manufacturing reps, and other stakeholders.
What You’ll Bring
- BS Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering.
- Minimum 5 years related experience in a technology based industry, where automated techniques are utilized in the finishing of consumer products.
- Experience working with/developing functional/aesthetic finishing processes.
- Experience in developing, executing and interpreting results of Design of Experiments (DOE)
- Industrial Engineering experience working in high-volume manufacturing processes.
- New product introduction and Manufacturing Operations experience desired
- Proficient in using SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD.
- Proficiency in the development and deployment of PFMEAs
- Knowledge of Production Parts Approval Process (PPAP)
- Six Sigma Black belt is advantageous
- Knowledge of automated equipment systems and tools - robotic, vision, material handling, Conveyors, PLC, HMI, etc.
- Well organized with meticulous attention to detail
- Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc (MS Office suite)
- Travel required – 10%
