Project Manager

esla is looking for a Project Control Manager to work on large scale ground-up Engineering-Procurement-Construction (EPC) project that requires exceptional talent. The product portfolio is expanding with never-built-before production lines, and requirements demand cell production volume at a scale which was once thought to be impossible to reach.  Our environment is fast-paced and incredibly exciting. Required commitment is that you bring in your passion for advancing energy sustainability, your desire to work on difficult problems pushing the limits, your willingness to value team success beyond your own, and your unwavering positive attitude towards sustained hard work.

The Project Control Team’s primary objective is to support the EPC group in the design, planning, and execution of company infrastructure projects by providing management with critical decision-making information that ensures projects deliver on time and on budget. The Team does this by closely collaborating with other functional teams throughout the project lifecycle to ensure adequate definition of scope, cost, and schedule; establish reasonable baselines; identify and manage risk; and track, monitor, and report project performance.  The Team can then make valuable recommendations that improve and drive project performance.

Tesla is seeking a Project Controls Manager with relevant construction experience to support the buildout of Tesla’s global facilities and infrastructure. This position will be responsible for cost management, cost analysis, cost reporting and benchmarking throughout the project life cycle. In addition, this role will support the change management and risk management process.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the development and implementation of cost management program for construction projects, including approved budget, total commitments, cost incurred and invoiced costs.
  • Support the Change Management process to ensure accurate cost projection for each project.
  • Produce reports/dashboards to communicate cost & schedule performance
  • Perform trend analysis and actively evaluate project cost performance to identify potential risk areas and validate forecast.
  • Maintain cost tools and reports to communicate metrics and performance to the project team and senior managers to make quantitative based decisions.
  • Estimate planning:  Construct the estimate plan including the breakdown of work into estimating packages, delegating estimating responsibility both internally and externally (to third-party estimating firms), and tracking progress against the plan.
  • Basis of Estimate (BOE):  Develop and manage a comprehensive BOE document throughout the estimate lifecycle noting the scope, execution strategy, level of precision, key assumptions, exclusions, risks, and other critical information.
  • Material Take Offs:  Perform periodic material takeoffs from 2D drawings or 3D models to validate design and contractor proposed quantities.
  • Estimating:  Manage cost estimating from high-level rough-order-of-magnitude (ROM) to definitive, bottoms-up estimates.  Conduct estimate meetings and work closely with key stakeholders including engineering, procurement, scheduling, and construction management to align the estimate with the execution plan and enhance the overall accuracy of the estimate.  Ensure complete scope coverage of the estimate, identify the potential for design growth, and ensure allowances are appropriately used.  Convert estimates into key unit rates and validate with industry benchmarks and internal historical rates.
  • Quality Reviews:  Perform quality peer reviews over work prepared and submitted by others to ensure completeness and accuracy
  • Benchmarking: Track historical cost to help develop up to date benchmarking data for estimating.
  • Other work as needed in support of successful project delivery.

What You’ll Bring

  • BS in Engineering, Construction, Construction Management, or other relevant areas or equivalent industry experience
  • 10+ years of experience in Project Controls: preferably in industrial, manufacturing, and/or high-tech industries
